Le Max is a gigantic flagship smart phone that measures a Qualcomm snapdragon 810 processor, a 6.3-inch Quad-HD screen, a 21 MP sensor, and equipped with customized DAC of ESS and amplifier (ES9018Q2C). Le Max indeed has an flagship hardware configuration. What is the experience of making a call with a smart phone bigger than your palm? After known about screen and audio performance, we will review on call quality of Le Max today.

Qualcomm snapdragon 810 is among the high-end processors, and it has relatively impeccable hardware, system and application algorithm for noise reduction, after all, snapdragon 800 series has laid a good foundation for snapdragon 810. Since we start up call quality column, devices equipped with snapdragon 8XX series processors perform at high-end level. Although all Qualcomm noise reduction algorithms are called Fluence, when it comes to mid-end devices equipped with snapdragon 615, call quality especially hands-free performance is generally weak, this is also related to poor microphone adapterization sensitivity of low-end snapdragon devices. Snapdragon 810 is equipped with X10 LTE baseband that supports mainstream commercial wireless network and LTE multi-mode dual-SIM dual-standby, this is a great progress compared to snapdragon 800. Le Max has a big body that can contain bigger size speaker to improve sound quality. Conventionally, our call quality test is still under China Unicom GSM.

Earpiece Speaker Test

Conventionally, we place this cell phone indoor with normal signal, and set the call voice volume to maximum, then call 10010, which is China Unicom customer service hotline. Finally we will record and analysis this China Unicom fixed voice signal with professional sound card and microphone.

Output level of earpiece of Le Max is close to that of Le One, and volume of Le Max can meet need of daily use basically. Compared with Le One, the earpiece sound of Le Max is obviously fuller. The earpiece sound of Le One is relatively thin, and it is not as clear as Le Max in mid-range.

Speaker Test

We place this phone indoors with ambient noise level at 40db or less, and turn up the ringtone volume to maximum, then use a sound level meter to measure sound level at the distance of one meter from the phone.

Le Max performs well in ringtone. Sound of ringtone is also full as well, and its treble is not clean. There exists glitch in mid-range of ringtone, and perhaps there are obvious sound distortion and overflow at maximum volume. As a high-end smart phone, its speaker amplification circuit might be better than budget-friendly smart phones.

Noise Reduction Test

We place this phone indoors with ambient noise level at 32db or less, in the middle of the room, we use a human-like structure ¡°handholding¡± the phone to send voice signal, and put surround speakers playing to simulate ambient noise at 6db SNR. Under hands-free mode, the microphone voice input is lower than standard testing level 2 to 3 dB, which is among the standard level. Mainstream high-end devices are likely to be equipped with higher microphone voice input level. The microphone voice input level is relatively low under hands-free mode and it is lower than -8 dB.

  • Total Noise Level Reduction, TNLR: Total Noise Level Reduction illustrates the reduction of ambient noise level. The average level is above 5dB. Theoretically, higher TNLR would be better, but an over high result may be caused by severe attenuation of voice signal, or interruption caused by poor phone signal or noise reduction algorithm flaw.
    Signal-to-Noise Ratio Improvement, SNRI: capability of an NS method to enhance the speech component of a noisy speech signal from an additive background noise. SNR improves after noise reduction by comparing noise-reduced and raw voice signal. Generally, the improvement is over 4dB.
    SNRI-to-NPLR difference, DSN: the signal level difference between raw and noise-reduced. Noise reduction process would attenuate voice signal level, cell phones would gain signal to ensure the call quality. Theoretically, it would be best that signal level remain the same before and after noise reduction. A standard signal level peak is -2.5dB. If the signal was gained too high, overflow would happen, and that means frequent crackle, too low, voice signal strength would not be enough, and that means the sound would be too low, and the other end would not hear clearly.
    The result is just a test reference under similiar circumstances or conditions, third-party websites or official technical data cannot be used for comparison.

Noise reduction of Le Max reflects features of devices equipped with Qualcomm snapdragon 810, and ambient noise can be filtered to a very low level. Le Max performs generally in earpiece and speakers. Under hands-free mode, low signal output level influences testing result and practicability, this is a shortage for a 500-dollor smart phone.
