Edifier S2000MKII Acitve Speaker Review


Edifier S2000 MKII has finally been released after ten months of the publishing of S1000. The slogan The Return of the King is used for promotion, echoing the 1st gen S2000, as it has been 12 years since S2000 1st gen has been released, and S2000MKII is a long-from the current product line, the focus of S2000 MKII is not how it changes compared with its preceding product in 12 years ago or whether it is the king or not, while more importantly, the focus should be whether it has great improvement and breakthrough in core technology. S2000 MKII is priced 1,799 Yuan(about $273), 700 Yuan(about $100) higher than S1000. It has updated the long-awaited tweeter and also made some adjustments in some functions and appearance.

The Story of S2000

In the review of Edifier S1000, we have talked about our surprise about this active speaker and the publishing of S1000, not only because the outstanding performance of R1900TV and its price of nearly 1,000 Yuan, but also because there is no room in the production line for S1000 in EDIFIER model. It is not surprised to see the publishing of S2000 MKII, and Edifier released the planning of new S2000 through the grapevine. The main part is using better active speaker.

We have seen many comments left by netizens on the gallery of S2000 MKII, and they hope that we can compare S2000 MKII with S2000 Series of 12 years ago to see whether there is improvement or not. Many netizens also hold the idea that the appearance of S2000 is better than S2000 MKII. The only great memory of S2000 is the fondness for its appearance. From the technology of the active speaker to the power amplifier, the design of frequency division and its last performance, S1000 published last year is far better than S2000 and S2000V of 12 years ago, and whether S2000MKII is as good as what the EDIFIER described as The Return of the King, which was realized last year.

As an editor, the memory that S2000 12 years ago that left to us is a little more than to users, because we focus more on the details of the design of the product. We will review the technical details of it here for the last time. In the second half of 2004, EDIFIER launched S2000 active speaker, and it was the product that EDIFIER launched superior to R1900T Series. S2000 was priced around 2,000 Yuan(about $300), but the actual price reached 3,000 to 4,000 Yuan(about $450~600). With passive speaker and independent amplifier, S2000 is of exquisite workmanship, and it has the function of external DAC. EDIFIER has used new silk dome tweeter and woofer to S2000, and this technology platform has been used on R1900TIII also.

An amplifier of external DAC, on the one hand, means that the sound quality of the computerí»s sound card in those years is very poor, and little improvement may be made with optical fibers. On the other hand, when the major multimedia manufacturers hyped "independent amplifier" concept in 2004, S2000 of course made a shock as the flagship. S2000V, a version with the built-in amplifier, was launched later with its speaker units same as S2000, its amplifier fairly consistent with S2000 and the painting craft of its wooden box shrunk slightly. S2000V was priced over 1000 Yuan(about $149), but its actual price later was more than 2000 Yuan(about $300).

However, let bygones be bygones. R1900TV has shown us its greater performance than S2000V. The publishing of S1000 has been the most remarkable revolution for the entry level HiFi and the active 2.0 speaker for decades. Comparing today's platform with the well-known model in those years makes no sense, because significant superior has become a reality for a year. Such a conclusion has been made in the beginning of the article as it aims to let everyone concentrate in the following text on experiencing the changes brought about by S2000MKII as well as the sound performance of S2000MKII.

Upgrades of Functions and Core Hardware

Appearance and Major Functions

Edifier S2000 MKII keeps almost the same appearance modeling as S1000. When seeing the name of S2000MKII, people seem to be more sensitive than when seeing that of S1000, because many users will contrast S2000 MKII with the former S2000. S2000 MKII has a different style from the older S2000 which is of square appearance and is coated with multi-layered paint. However, compared with S1000, EDIFIER has been upgraded in terms of appearance configuration.

The wood on both sides of S2000 MKII is made of the solid wood material with the thickness of 18mm which has increased a lot more costs comparing with the compression plate of S1000. From a practical observation point of view, the texture of the solid wood is slightly better than that of the compression plate equipped by S1000. Compared with S1000, S2000 MKII has also improved the four foot pads at the bottom of the speaker box, and its beautiful degree and buffering function have been slightly leveled up. In order to be more recognizable, S2000MKII adopts a protective net on the front side of the speaker with a little different frame color from that of S1000.

In terms of the back of the speaker box, there is no significant change in the function of S2000MKII which supports the input of two sets of RCA analog signals. Nevertheless, it is a little surprise that the sensitivity of one signal input set marked by the official index stands at 700 mV and the other is 700 mV, while those of S1000 and R2000DB are 900 mV and 700 mV respectively. Why do we need to talk about the set of index? In brief, the voltage value marked by the input sensitivity refers to the theoretical power value under the voltage. As a digital power amplifier speaker, it needs to go through the Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) step, and the ADC signal overflow problem should be taken into consideration when the input signal voltage is too high. Voltage of 700 mV [í└50mV headroom of official index] is close to 0.775 Vrms [0dBm or 0dBu], so generally there is no problems with DAC sound card. Many high-end decoder devices will use voltage amplification output, with more than 2 Vrms voltage. S2000MKII may encounter the input signal overflow problem. Ití»s not a pleasant experience when the output voltage of your decoder or audio is very high, and there is no level control of the preamplifier.

S2000MKII supports the input of optical fiber and coaxial cable at the same time. This set of input finally can support the 24 bit/192 kHz signal. Actually the internal chip has not changed, but ití»s unknown why the previous R2000DB and S1000 do not support that. In terms of Bluetooth signals input, just as S1000, S2000MKII uses the CSR8645 chip that supports APT-X coding. From the products we have used, APT-X coding clearly has a better resolved force compared with the products without APT-X, but there are more restrictions in Bluetooth signals input compared with the wired input.

Besides, EDIFIER S2000MKII uses a very large remote control, which was also used in EDIFIER M360 speaker, and of course there are more buttons in the remote control of S2000MKII than it in M360 sound, but it keeps the comfortable feeling and beautiful appearance as before. It is just that the style doesní»t match the HiFi sound and the appearance design of S2000MKII so well.

Upgrades of Hardware

Flat Panel Tweeter: Before the publishing of Edifier S1000, customers realized from various sources that Edifier would launch more high-end speakers than S1000, so it was no surprise to find it named S2000 MKII. In that, what we expect most is the tweeter S2000 MKII will use. According to the previous news, the tweeter S2000 MKII will use is shown as below, which is the same the Flat panel diaphragm tweeter as the Airpulse Silver Reference-1 tweeter of AAD [AAD is a professional audio products brand founded by Phil Jone, and it was acquired by Edifier. The first product that Phil Jones took part in tuning was the S2000 speaker 12 years ago. Edifier may provide high-end products with the brand AAD later.]

We should know that a pair of Airpulse Silver Reference-1 is about 10,000 Yuan(about $1700), while the level and price of passive sound usually depend on the cost of corresponding speaker. The price of Silver Reference-1 is pretty reasonable, from which we can see the strength of the speaker. We see a flat panel diaphragm tweeter in S2000 MKII for real, which makes us excited and have a high expectation on it. For many normal users, they thought that [they commented on the article of Soomal] S2000 MKII costing the extra 700 Yuan by only upgrading a speaker is not attractive enough. But for the real audiophile, especially those users who have experienced Silver Reference-1, they know how valuable the upgrade is. Of course, we have to find out how the flat panel diaphragm tweeter performs in S2000 MKII.


From the teardown that Soomal conducted to S2000MKI and the further consultation of Edifier, we know that the speaker that S2000 MKII uses is made and adjusted by Edifier. From the picture, we can clearly see that it is a Flat panel diaphragm tweeter. The voice coils of the speaker are printed in the diaphragm in a looping manner. In the following picture, we will specially focus on the diaphragm teardown of T50RP. Because the space between a speaker and a humaní»s ears is much farther than it between an earphone and a humaní»s ears, the high pitch of S2000 MKII cannot be on a par with the current top planar magnetic headphone unit [S2000 MKII only focuses on high pitch, which is different from planar magnetic headphone]. But when we look at its appearance, it seems that the thickness of the diaphragm of S2000MKI is similar to it of T50RP or even thicker.

Small-sized Flat panel diaphragm tweeter has the shortcoming that the maximum power it can withstand is relatively low and manual assembly wastes time and efforts [The tweeter in Silver Reference 1 is like this, but it must have far lower sales than S2000 MKII], so it is said that the tweeter in S2000 MKII has not reached the full strength of the tweeter in Silver Reference 1. How well does it work? Please see below.

Digital frequency division and digital power amplifier: in the new wave of updates of speakers of the EDIFIER in recent years, the digital frequency division and digital power amplifier are the core architectures of the "inside" of the speaker box, and is the same to S2000 MKII, but it just has several specific upgrades compared with S1000.

Digital power amplifier: S2000 MKII continues to use TI TAS5754 digital power amplifier chip which is a close-loop class-D audio amplifier. The chip supports I2S digital signal input of 192 kHz with PWM frequency of 768 kHz. Different from the previous version which used two power amplifier chips to amplify tweeter and woofer, S2000 MKII uses three TAS5754 chips, with one chip in each of the two woofers. The internal of each chip uses PBTL connection to increase the output power and reduce the output impedance. And two tweeters are driven by one TAS5754 chip. The channel power of the woofer power amplifier is for 50Wx2 [S1000 35Wx2], while the power in the tweeter part is 15Wx2. Due to the change of the tweeters, the tweeter power value is indeed lower than the tweeter power of S1000.

Digital frequency division: In terms of the function of digital frequency division, S2000 MKII still uses two TI TLV320AIC3254 chips to complete it by programmable DSP. It not only needs to complete the accurate frequency division of the speaker, but can finely adjust the sound style of the speaker box that you want. It may be reserved on S1000 speakers, the sound style adjustment function on R1900 series does not appear on the S1000. Under the control of the digital frequency division system, S2000 MKII adds four choices of sound style, that is, Monitor, Dynamic, Classic and Vocal. The four sound style models show a slight adjustment in frequency response curve, and specific listening feeling will be mentioned bellow.

Signal Reception and Management: As digital power amplifier is used for final amplifier, the input analog signal needs ADC processing. Chips take the charge of managing remote control, switching, display and other work when there are multiple sets of audio input. S2000 MKII supports coaxial and optical fiber input of S/Pdif, ordinary analog signal input and Bluetooth wireless input. In the management of a complete set of sound system, S2000 MKII still uses the STM 8L152 single chip to complete the management.

Compared with the previous design, S2000 MKII adds a separate ADC chipí¬TI BB PCM1802 for the analog signal input, but it also retains the previous PCM9211 chip of R2000DB and S1000. PCM9211 is an ADC chip and also supports digital signal receiving, so PCM9211 is still needed to input the optical fiber and coaxial signal and support Bluetooth signal digital interface. Meanwhile, the PCM1802 added is superior to the PCM9211 in terms of ADC performance. In the analog signal input part, S2000 MKII adds PCM1802 under a little bit of work. For example, the WIMA's coupling capacitance is added, which is much better in appearance and in theory than the one using PCM9211 alone, but this is not the key point of this Edifier system.

Summary: Let's sum up the speaker configuration, internal digital frequency division, digital power amplifier and changes compared to S1000. S2000 MKII uses a self-produced Flat panel diaphragm tweeter. The tweeter of this structure is uncommon among the multimedia speakers of the same price. Its design stems from the tweeter on Mr. Phil Jones's Airpulse Silver Reference-1. It is not completely the same as that tweeter when S2000 MKII undergoes mass production. In the digital power amplifier part, it uses three TAS5754 digital power amplifier chips, and each woofer is responsible for the PBTL output in one chip. And two tweeters share one chip. In the analog input part [the most commonly used input] single channels and ADC chips are used to complete the input, which is a little better than before.
