Huawei Mate 9 was branded as a smartphone co-engineered with Leica. It is a step head revolutionary smartphone experience and sports a second-generation Leica Dual Camera. The Huawei Mate 9 sports dual-camera design. Both of the two lens has F2.2 aperture, and 27mm equivalent focus length, and OIS integrated. However, the CMOS image sensors are different, one is a 12MP RGB sensor, the other is a 20MP monochrome sensor, and Huawei did not mark what the CIS model is. This design is different from that of iPhone 7 Plus, LG G5 or vivo Xplay 6, functions is also a little different. Mate 9 succeed P9's resolution, it can take color photos as well as native mono photos, or the mono camera can be used for depth information detection.
Huawei also noted Advanced 4 Hybrid Auto-Focus, which means that the AF performance will be better than P9. Also, Huawei becomes plainer in description, we cannot find the 1 + 1 > 2 slogan any more.
Mate 9 has a 27mm equivalent lens, wider than the 28mm mainstream, but the aperture is F2.2, smaller than other flagships' camera. A smaller aperture helps improve image quality at corners. Mate 9 has an excellent image quality at corners, sharp enough but a little blurring under strong daylight, and sharpening process also exists, the photos look a little hard, still acceptable.
Huawei Mate 9 has an outstanding anti-flare performance, when strong light shining into directly, no significant image fogging will be produced, and only a little ghosting and radioactive-like flares, easy to be avoided. When meet side backlights, arc-like flares may be produced, as well as slight fogging, also easy to be avoided.
Huawei uses a smaller aperture to provide a more reliable image quality. However, this is not because of Leica, but the progress by the lens industry.
Mate 9 provides 4 auto focus modes, including PDAF, Laser AF, Depth AF and Contrast Detection AF, this smartphone will choose one according to different scenes. To tell you the truth, we still cannot figure out what is the depth autofocus. Huawei used depth autofocus in Honor 6 Plus and P9, but the speed is slow. Laser autofocus uses laser to measure how far away the target object is, and this AF can be just used in a small distance. Contrast detection AF is the most common way to focus in smartphones, it can be fast in Panasonic cameras, but not that fast in smartphones. So on-chip PDAF is another way to improve AF speed on smartphones.
Mate 9 is significant faster in AF than P9, thanks to the PDAF. Combined with the pre-focus, Mate 9 is able to capture most scenes with just pressing the shutter. However, the speed is still much slower than Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, after all Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is the fastest in smartphones.
The default metering mode of Mate 9 is average metering, which is able to cope with most scenes. Mate 9 is tending to take bright photos, so under strong light, the white part of a subject may overflow a little. When you touch to focus, Mate 9 will meter on that spot, and the metering weight will adjust according to the scene. You can also adjust exposure comprehension like iPhones in auto mode, and professional mode provides 4EV exposure comprehension with 0.3EV a step.
