The success of R series making OPPO become the top 5 brands of the global mobile phone market, which is not an accident. R series has been positioned as " Bucket Machine", in addition, OPPO can always straight to the point of marketing, for example, the slogan "Charge for 5 minutes, talk for 2 hours" has enjoyed popular support. The slogan of R11 is "Beauty made clearer, dual 20MP cameras".

Taking camera as their first selling point, that was things happened in N series times. The stunning appearance of N series faded away at last because the market didn't go for it. Once ideal relies on R series. Camera has been taking as the selling point of R series, however, it's maybe the first time to take it in such an important selling position.

Lens, Focus and Metering

Overview

R11 sports asymmetric rear dual-camera design, which is similar to the design of iPhone 7 Plus. The asymmetry refers to focus length. The two lenses are the combination of wide angle and telephoto lens. They are two common and useful focus lengths, which has about 28mm and 35mm measured equivalent focus length respectively. Records on EXIF were wrong, which was 25mm and 32mm. But the software design of R11 made the switch of telephoto lens inconveniently. There is a confusing design on R11, that is, it has a 2X button on camera screen. On iPhone 7 Plus, the 2X button can switch to telephoto lens, however, the button fails to do so on R11, and it is still digital zoom. You must tap the camera switching button in the top right corner in manual mode to enable the telephoto lens. R11 can be different from iPhone, but this operation is unreasonable in logic. It will not only influence efficiency but reduce the practicality of telephoto lens. The asymmetric design doesn't make full use of its advantage.

The wide angle is a 16MP lens and has F1.7 aperture with Sony IMX398, which is the same as R9s. The new type of on-chip PDAF system is not the dual-pixel autofocus but the autofocus of dual-pixel phase-detection system. There are 128 phase-detection points, although it doesn't have the fastest autofocus speed, it is able to capture most scenes with just pressing the shutter. The telephoto lens uses IMX350 and is a 20MP camera. It is the phase-detection autofocus, but not the dual-pixel autofocus. It is just like the last generation with a low efficiency. Neither of them has OIS integrated, which is not good for the low light imaging.

R11 has Portrait Mode, that is a simulation function for bokeh, and it is the standard function for most dual-camera smartphones. The dual-camera is designed asymmetrically, how does it work on this function? Under this condition, the wide-angle lens will become the main camera, while the telephoto lens will be functioned to measure the DoF. Because of the different focus lengths, wide angle lens will reach the same focus length with the telephoto lens through digital zoom. In view of the redundancy of multi-frame, the corners of composition would be discarded, thus the equivalent focus length is about 38-40mm in Portrait Mode.

The aperture of R11 is F1.7, which is one of the models with the largest aperture. Large aperture lens design is not good to the imaging at corners, which will deteriorate the image quality with an acceptable range. The center is good as R9s, and it belongs to a better one but not the best, such as HTC U11 and Galaxy S8+. Sharpening process also exists, but it still acceptable, and doesn't as critical as Honor 9. Compared with R9s, R11 increased the process of chromatic aberration, thus the phenomenon has almost faded away and the vignetting has been optimized.

When strong light shining into directly, no significant image fogging will be produced, and only a little ghosting and radioactive-like flares, belonging to normal phenomenon. Side backlight may lead to a little haze, but easy to be avoided. R11 has a well anti-flare performance.

Combined with the pre-focus, R11 has a very fast autofocus response speed. The response speed of scene switching is almost equal to Samsung Galaxy S8+.

Compared with the best autofocus performance, R11 also has the failing autofocus under some occasion. For example, the black object in the backlighting on the frame above shows that R11 fail to realize autofocus. Therefore, the autofocus should be improved in logic. Micro shooting has a lower success rate, as it is easy to focus on background. Even if it has succeeded, it is still not the most wanted focus, which is also because the autofocus is not good enough in logic.

The default metering mode of R11 is center weighted average, which is suitable for most scenes. The metering strategy is a little brighter, so you can get a relatively lively color expression. But in fine day, some white part may overflow. The metering results in lowlights is also a little brighter. You can use focus point weighted metering, and just tap the screen. In Pro Mode, the focus point can be separated from metering, which can be used in some special situations. In addition, it also provides exposure comprehension tools with 3EV range and 0.1EV to adjust.
