HTC still maintains a good reputation in certain areas, such as cameras, and Soomal is also concerned about HTC's related technologies. HTC hardcore fans are still quite a lot, one day, a tall, fat, handsome and rich reader handed in the latest HTC U12+, we must experience this niche phone.

Lens, Focus and Metering

Overview

U12+ adopts dual front and back cameras, the front dual camera uses dual 8MP CIS, lens aperture F2.0, equivalent focal length of about 24 mm. The rear dual camera adopts asymmetric design, the main camera uses 12MP CIS, integrating the on-chip full-pixel dual-core focusing, likely to be Sony IMX363, widely used. The main lens is integrated with optical image stabilization, aperture F1.75, and is displayed as F1.8 in the Exif. Its equivalent focal length is about 26 mm. The sub camera uses a 16MP sensor, lens aperture F2.6, click on the 2X button on the camera software to switch to the sub camera. In fact, the equivalent focal length is not twice the focal length of the main lens, the actual measurement is about 1.7 times, about 45 mm.

Auto-Focus

UltraSpeed is a term used by HTC to package its focusing technology. In fact, it is full-pixel dual-core focusing and laser focusing. Laser focusing should be mainly used for macro shooting. In low light conditions, you can even see the ring infrared light projected by the mobile phone through the viewfinder. Speed is not a problem, especially with the support of the pre-focus system, you can achieve first-class focus speed. The sub camera will focus much slower, and it is basically enough to not shoot moving objects.

Soomal has always stressed that the current focus competition is no longer just speed, because the speed of the mainstream models is enough to meet the daily shooting. We need a higher level of design, which is the optimization of focus logic. For example, the above picture, our shooting intention is very clear, to focus on the butterfly, but U12+ is on the middle point. The U12+'s autofocus range is small enough to cover the center point, and there is no guessing of the photographer's intentions, so this kind of shooting failure will occur.

Metering

The U12+ default metering mode is the average mode. In fact, the default mode is not important, because metering for scenes has become more and more popular. U12+ is optimized for sunny scenes. It can be seen that most of the white areas under strong light are well controlled, and only a few examples have mild spills.

However, metering in low-light scenes is another matter. In low-light scenes, U12+ metering is radical, causing significant overflow.

U12+ also has the function of metering on focus spot, but it is off in default. The sensitivity of linkage is not too large. It has priority on the metering result and is easy to master. Exposure compensation tools are available in both professional and automatic modes. The exposure compensation range is 3 EV in professional mode and 0.1 EV in steps, while 5 EV in automatic mode and 0.17 EV stepping.

The U12+ also introduces a face recognition and metering linkage mode that recognizes that the face will be prioritized for face metering and then uses HDR to ensure background exposure.
